About the Artist: I am an inmate at San Quentin State Prison serving a life sentence. In the last couple of decades, I have found tranquility in painting. In most cases, I paint for the pleasure of creating. However, at times I try to regenerate the messages of past or obscured artists, especially Black artists who paved my way - those artists who leave behind inspiring as well as historic pieces. My skill is not yet as talented. However, I honor these artists, bringing awareness to their work, their perception, and their insight of an earlier environment of our African heritage, struggles and future. This painting depicts the vision of Aaron Douglas - a 20th century Black artist. From 1934 to 1936, three of his paintings inspired me to tie his message together on one canvas. The titles are: African Setting 1934, Into Bondage 1936 and Aspiration 1936. Aaron’s vision of the past and the future continues to unfold today.
